The Puffin Diaries
My Beck’s Blue Period
It has been some weeks now since my 40th birthday, well 68 days to be precise but who’s counting. Not me actually, alright in the beginning I would think wow I’ve done “X” amount of days without a drink, but I’ve stopped now. My busy days merge into each other and I often don’t have time to think about it. I exclaimed just the other day “I don’t know when I ever had time to drink”.

School Uniform
L has all her uniform hanging neatly in her wardrobe, shoes polished & various co-ordinating hairbands arranged (and re-arranged on an almost daily basis) on her bedside table.
But H..well, we’ve had a bit of a problem. I can confidently say that he has tried on every potential pair of trousers in every single shop in town. Unlike his sister, he is small in stature, and has the added problem of having no hips or bottom. Well he does, but for the purposes of trousers, they are too small to do the job that nature intended.

Alpine Mummy – a new life in the middle of nowhere
This morning I went for a run
This morning I went for a run. A very short run but a run nonetheless. The thing about going for a run in the mountains is, well, there’s mountains. It’s not like in London where my running consisted of making a beeline for the river and then running as far as possible along it. The thing about going for a run next to the Thames is, well, it’s flat.

The first of many
This is it… my first blog post. I’ve spent a good month year or so messing about with WordPress, installing/un-installing themes, altering colours, deciding on fonts and think it’s safe to say I now detest HTML. I’m very glad to say I am now ready to begin doing what I set out to do… BLOG.

Five’s A Fellowship
Not PR freindly
If you’re a regular over at Five’s A Fellowship, then when you look at my pages, you’ll notice I’ve gotten rid of my disclosure page.
Over the last month or so, I fell head over heels in love with blogging. I even recently shared some tips I’ve picked up along the way, that might help new bloggers like myself. One thing I didn’t touch upon was what seems to be a common thing with some bloggers, and that is ‘blogging for perks’.

The Scurge of Facebook
Over the past few days I’ve had a few disturbing links sent to me via my Facebook wall regarding tasteless pages and groups on Facebook. You know the type of thing, you’ve probably had similar ones sent to you. Pages of jokes about dead babies, jokes about people with cancer deserving to die. Friends have sent these links to me in outrage, wanting me to join their campaign to rid Facebook of them. Report the pages, comment on the pages and show my disapproval.

Midwives delivering under pressure
I’ve just seen a new programme that’s starting tomorrow evening at 9pm on BBC2. It follows the midwives on the Central Delivery Unit at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Manchester – one of the busiest labour wards in the country and one of my options for delivery. These midwives have to work out how best to look after each mum and her baby, whilst juggling the resources of a modern hospital.

Ha, you don’t fool me universe, I know your game, you crafty cow. You’re just hatching something immense to proper shit us up. So what did the universe do?
She killed my toilet.
Ha. Funny. I get it.
Three days, three people, and no toilet.
NO UNIVERSE, NO!
I shan’t go into details, I’m already deeply ashamed of myself, let’s just say the other half and I will never look at each other in the same way again, and there may be a patch in my garden (private, mind) where we will NEVER GO NEAR EVER AGAIN.

The Worry Monster
Over the past 5 months of blogging, I have sporadically brought up DD2′s anxieties. My post about Separation Anxiety encouraged a torade of comments – both helpful and sympathetic, many readers pouring out their own experiences and feelings during childhood.
Despite small progress in this area, ‘the worry monster’ has reared his ugly head again. Two nights ago, just as I was thinking about going to bed myself, DD2 wandered downstairs and announced that she could not sleep.

Scared? Proud? Sad? How do you feel?
How did i get here? Where has the last eleven years gone? One minute you’re dropping them off at Reception, then next they are off on their own to BIG school!
Well, that told me. And there I was filled with a huge mixture of emotions all in one go…..sad that my not so little boy is going to big school, scared because……

Windows on Wildlife – Lions
We’ve just had a Bank Holiday here in the UK. We’re through the Olympic euphoria, we’re building up to the Paralympics – but essentially it’s a slow news month. On Sunday night, reports started emerging that there was a lion on the loose in Essex – over on the East coast. No zoos had ‘lost’ a lion but it was allegedly sighted – the police helicopter and firearms teams scrambled and people in the area advised to stay indoors….

Not hassling, not being mean, just being sensible
Remember that time you were depressed. That time you were skint. The day you really struggled with your child, what about the day when you really really hoped that things would work out, but actually they didn’t. On that day, that really rough day, imagine that you had all the stress of moving. The boxes, the paperwork, the money! The hoping, dreaming of something better, a new start. On that day, in that time of your life, is this what you would like to have been presented with, when you walk into your new property, with your small child

Reclaim Overpayed Tax Now – It’s Easy!
Earlier this year a letter came through my door with a cheque for 890 pounds. It was my tax return.
Contrary to popular belief claiming tax back, without the help of a third-party company, is easy. What’s not easy, is finding the right information of how exactly the whole process works, what is required of you and how to check if it’s worth it.
Once I dug out the answers from between the adverts of companies that wanted to handle my claim for me I quickly formed an easy-to-follow action plan, which I’m delighted to share with you below.

The Painters are in…
What a mess, I wonder no more to the other meaning of ” the painters are in..”.the common factor being mess. It’s a topic which, despite the more blatant modern day advertising, is still a bit taboo. What woman if asked by a male colleague what was wrong would reply “Ive got my period”

Happy Anniversary!
So today is my 5 year wedding anniversary. I can’t quite believe it’s been that long to be honest and so much has happened! I thought about doing a little tribute to my Other Half but then realised it would most definitely be over the top and soppy so instead I thought I’d do a photo roundup of some of the highlights of the last 5 years…please feel free to come along for the journey

Welcome to Ma Puce
The French Learning Resource For Children Aged 0 – 6 Years
So, the time has finally arrived! Time, that is, for Ma Puce to go live!!
I’ve been thinking about creating a site like this ever since my daughter, who is referred to as ‘Ma Puce’ on this blog, was around 20 months old. Why? Because that’s when my mission to teach her French as a second language really started to take off. You can read all about Our Story to see why and how we got started on our non-native bilingual French journey…

Mischievous Monday
Mischievous Monday
This week I want to show you my new dog! If you have been here before you may have read that I am scared of dogs. It all stems back to an overweight and over friendly Labrador named Benji and my sister teasing another dog that decided to attack me when I tried to give him his ball back. This dog, however, is well behaved and goes by the name of Pattersley.

Losing my Mummy
There are certain events which mark you for life. One way or another, good or bad, there are some things which have a profound impact which stays with you, and alters your path.
In early 2010 my mum was diagnosed with bladder cancer. She had been unwell for a few months and it took a while to find out why. It took me utterly by surprise when we found out; it hadn’t even crossed my mind it could be a possibility.
Not long after, I finally got pregnant.

Review: Poppy Cat – Birthday Treasure and Other Adventures DVD
I’ll come clean, when I was asked if we’d like to review a Poppy Cat DVD I read the information about the DVD and thought that it looked ideal for my 4 year old Scamp but I wasn’t aware of Poppy Cat as a character.
Having received and viewed Poppy Cat Birthyday Treasures and Other Adventures numerous times this week I can now report that Poppy Cat is incredibly cute and that my daughter, Scamp, is smitten!

Mammasaurus thanks for including my blog. I am fresh faced and wet behind the ears in the world of blogging and every little bit of recognition sends my tummy into somersaults. I am now going to catch up with your other recommendations surrounded by a warm glow. Cheers, or maybe not cheers considering blog content.
Hey no worries Sarah, when you are new to blogging you can feel like a little fishy in a very big ocean, I felt like that just over a year ago when I started blogging. I was scared stiff and completely in awe of folk like Kate Takes 5 and Sticky Fingers, they were like blog-gods. A year on I’ve been to a few blogging events, met those ladies, liked them and realised that the big names in blogging are lovely and that we’re all the same – secretly we all mostly write whilst in our PJs in the evening
Some very good recommendations! Some I know but plenty I don’t, will definitely be doing some reading & snooping later on
