Mummy and the Monsters

Stepping out of the mummy uniform

Lately I’ve noticed I have adopted the ‘mummy uniform’. The ‘uniform’ varies from mummy to mummy, but for me, it usually consists of boyfriend jeans, a vest and cardi or the ever reliable dress/leggings combo and a comfy pair of flats. If I am feeling reckless I’ll throw on a pretty scarf, but sadly no jewellery as monster #2 likes to use my necklaces as chew toys and usually when they are still around my neck!
I used to love fashion, I still do! I have a wardrobe full of fancy shoes….

Finding The Inner Child

This year is the first year I have managed to start doing all the things with Monkey & Mookin that I did as a child. The first year that they can appreciate it, and that I can relive my youth through them.

Dummy Wars

On another of my prowlings around various internet forums, I stumbled upon yet another mummy battle. The battle of the Demon Dummy/soother. I must point out that I am not anti soother at all, my eldest used one because her reflux was so bad and our baby was very sucky so I used to offer one to her, she was never interested though. A question was asked anonymously through the forum host about what the best age to wean a baby off a soother. As you can imagine the answers came flooding in.

Learning Early

Craving a bit of stability

Craving a bit of stability

Sometimes I really miss primary school. The chance to explore your own imagination, try new experiences for the first time, and push a few boundaries.

Every grazed knee told a story, until one day you stumbled in the playground and for the first time you didn’t cry as the blood seeped from the cut. That was the first badge of honour, a real achievement on the road to being grown-up: learning some of life’s knocks aren’t worth shedding tears over.

Catch A Single Thought

Magpie Meg

Last week I wrote about Eli’s climbing antics for Middle Man’s Mischevious Monday and whilst pondering over which of his little misdemeanours to include this week Meg came into the room, put her hand in her pocket and pulled out a toy which didn’t belong to us. I asked her where she got it from and she just shrugged and said “I put it in my pocket”….yes, Mummy could see that!

Meg has always had hoarding tendencies. We’ve called her our little magpie since she was a baby as anything sparkly and shiny grabs her attention and the second…

3 Children and It

If you’ve been following my blog, you might remember a recent post entitled ‘To do or not to do?’ The basic theme was giving myself (and you!) permission to not do certain things, things that are driven by guilt or an overriding feeling that we should be doing them – kind of like the opposite of a ‘to do’ list. If you’re still unclear, just read the post here! It would seem that many people had been yearning for a bit of freedom in their lives, as this was my fourth most popular post ever….

Afterwards…

So, I actually made a decision, well I say “made”, but it was like a switch tripped in my head and my mouth just opened automatically, circumventing brain and… I heard myself say the words, “I want a divorce” ( a thought- surely not, women like me don’t do this, do they ?)

Getting ready to write

I have been out of the blog loop for a few weeks. Where have I been?

Belgium.

There is something about it that sounds comical for some reason and it may not immediately seem like a prime holiday destination but here is my story:

Five’s A Fellowship

The Manifestations of Grief

The Manifestations of Grief

On Christmas morning 2011, our house was full of laughter, excitement and the many other things that you associate with that festive day. We had only just moved in to the property, after years of fighting for a place to call home, the twins were almost three months old and we were all glowing with the space, warmth and joy that recent events had given to us.

That morning, I received a phone call from the other end of the country, informing me that my mother had passed away.

Two of Everything

Getting ready to write

In order to write, you have to be able to hold a pencil. You have to hold it in a certain way, and push it and pull it in the right directions and at the right time, to form letters and words.
Imagine you are wearing boxing gloves and holding a pencil in the hand you wouldn’t normally (so the left hand if you are right-handed). This is a bit like what it’s like for young children, before they have developed the muscles they need to write ‘properly’; it’s really hard!
So how can we help them?

How To Buy Those Perfect Presents

How To Buy Those Perfect Presents » simple couple

The giving season is starting in my family. We have seven birthdays coming up in the last quarter of the year . And of course, there is also Christmas to top it all up.

I’m one of those people who love to buy and give presents. The surprise on someone’s face followed by an honest bust of joy is one of the greatest gifts I receive back for giving. It’s good to know that you help someone by presenting them with something they truly crave or need.

But finding out those thing and picking up presents takes time. And time…

Little Magic Beans

Fox’s Socks – the morning after

Little Bean has a new favourite. She has moved on from I took the Moon for a Walk and is instead obsessed with lift-the-flaps books, in particular Fox’s Socks. I love that she loves books but I am a little but concerned at the appropriateness of Fox’s Socks.

Fox wakes up looking a bit bleary eyed, clearly from a hangover. His clothes are strewn everywhere (as if torn off in the height of passion) and Little Mouse, quite clearly his, shall we say, ‘overnight companion’ has brought him a lovely cup of tea to soothe his aching head.

Gooseberry and Elderflower Cake

Gooseberry and Elderflower Cake

Gooseberries are in season and with the rain followed by sun ours are plump bundles of sweet tangyness that explode in your mouth when you bite into them.  So ripe they haven’t needed sweetening.

This recipe can be used for a loaf cake or cupcakes:
